Stratton House Yard Sale This Weekend
Another reminder that Stratton House are having a clear-out of the house and outbuildings. Everything will be undercover so please pop along even if it is raining.
Proceeds from the yard sale are going towards the upkeep of the church building.
It’s from 11am – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Church Matters

There will be a Morning Service in Stratton Audley Church at 10.45am this Sunday (10th December) – all are welcome, as ever. And then in the afternoon….Christmas Crafts and Christingle Service (3-5pm) this Sunday. Last year we had a great time with lots of families from the village coming along to join in making things and celebrating together, with festive refreshments for everyone. ‘Little Lambs’ baby and toddler group continues in church on Wednesdays, starting at 9.30am and finishing at 11am. This coming Wednesday, 13th December, will be the last meeting of the term and will be the Christmas Party! Parish Council Vacancies
We are pleased to announce that inaddition to Richard Bond who joined the parish council at the last meeting, another new persons in the village, Owen Bowen-Jones has been co-opted as a councillor. Both bring new energy and enthusiasm at an important time with develops at Bicester Heritage increasing and the potential solar farm on the horizon. The Chairman will be resigning at the January meeting but will remain for a few months as a councillor, just to ensure a smooth hand-over to Anthony Flack who has has generously stepped-up to become interim Chairman. There is still one more open vacancy and it is hoped this will are filled at the next meeting in January.Whether you’re a seasoned local or a recent arrival, as long as you’re over 18 and reside in the Parish, not just the village, your perspective matters.Curious? Update on Two Major Planning Matters
We have received the following updates from the Planning Department at CDC:

Solar Farm
“The application is still under consideration. The procurement process for securing landscape consultants has taken longer than expected as we have worked through the Council’s procurement process. We have now selected consultants and I’m working with he procurement team to get the contracts sorted so this work can be completed. 
 
We were aiming to take this to committee in January, but as the report deadline will be before the Christmas break, this is now looking unlikely as we need the landscape work to be completed. I think it is more realistic that this will be presented to the planning committee in February”.

Bicester Heritage
“This application is also still under consideration. We had asked the applicant to provide some more information to help us to better understand the details of the uses that are proposed. I have another meeting with the agent this week.

I will also be meeting with our enforcement team so we can better understand the already permitted uses/applications and the activities that they are currently investigating. We are planning to work together as we are aware of the concerns being raised by third parties.

There are clearly a wide range of activities that the applicant is hoping to capture within this application. Some of them, such as the larger events or noisy uses will have the potential for a greater impact on neighbouring residents. At this stage, I think we need more information so that everyone can better understand the precise nature of the proposal and the frequency of uses that are being sought.

This application will also need to be referred to the planning committee for determination. Again we are aiming for January committee but this may not be possible”.

They tell me that it is checked daily and matters are put straight into the system for investigation.You can upload photos but you don’t have to and it really isn’t difficult, so please give it a try:

Despite the pub closing, Jack from Grimsby continues to come to the village on Thursday’s between 6.15-7pm and parks his van outside the Red Lion. He has a wide selection of fresh fish and shellfish. You can just turn up or place orders in advance by text and his mobile number is 07535 935119.

Fish & Chips Van in the village on Saturdays
For those new in the community, a Howe’s Fish and Chip van comes to the village every Saturday lunchtime from 1.30pm to 2pm. You will hear a bell (like a school bell) and his first stop is in Cherry Street. He then drives along Cavendish Place and stops again at the junction with Mill Road.

Happy anniversary to Alison Howson
A heart congratulations to Alison who moved to the village sixty years ago today! It is great to know that our oldest resident at 93 is also one of the longest serving members of the community. That takes her and us back to 1963 and in the intervening period the Parish has apparently had 10 Vicars, 10 publicans and numerous Parish Chairmen!

Notice of Road Sweeping Friday 1st December
Our winter sweep of the roads in the village by Cherwell District Council has been fixed for Friday 1st December. The lorry usually starts around 8 am and finishes sometime around noon. As usual, would those who park on the road move their vehicles onto the grass verges or somewhere else, either before or when you hear the vehicle in your road. Those who are able, are asked to clear leaf debris from outside their property and sweep it into the road for collection.
We are one of the few villages who co-ordinates this activity so the lorry can collect the maximum amount of debris from the roads which at this time of year is particularly important. Thank you for your cooperation.

George France Nicholson
As most of you will know, one of the great characters of the village, George Nicholson passed away on 6th November just 2 days before his 86th birthday. He will be sadly missed.
The following is from Vivienne, Andrew and Duncan:
“The Nicholson family would like to invite you to join them to celebrate the life of a much loved Husband, Father and Grandfather.
A service will take place at 12:45pm on Thursday 30 November 2023 in the church at Stratton Audley. Following the service, everyone is invited to join the family at The Littlebury Hotel, Kings End, Bicester, Oxfordshire OX26 6DR.
A book of condolence will be available at both the service and the Littlebury Hotel. There will also be a charity collection as part of the service with the proceeds going to the Church and the John Radcliffe Hospital.
The following day, Friday 1 December 2023, there will be a private, family only, cremation ceremony. On behalf of the whole family, we would like to thank everyone for their kindness at this most difficult time”.

Pop-up nights – We just wanted to say a huge Thank you to everyone who has supported the Barn pop-up nights, especially the cold November night! Verity’s mac’n’cheese went down a treat, proving a hit. It’s been lovely to have the opportunity to bring the community  together whilst we are without our much loved pub with both familiar and new faces to the barn from the village. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did!

With our Christmas shop now open and as we head full on into this fabulous but crazy festive season, it feels like the right time to let you know that 2024 will see our Cafè close and the barn take a new direction.
The last few years have been challenging for both large business and small and there has been no let up! We’ve worked hard to adapt to the twists and turns the world has thrown at us, and absorb some of the losses this created, now coupled with a recent health scare, it is time for us to pause and consider the future shape of the business.
The shop & Café will close in their current form, until further notice on 22nd December 2023; rest assured, whatever we do, Christmas will always remain the heart of the barn and will be back for sure in 2024!

Now that the clocks have gone back and with fewer opportunities for us all to get together without our lovely pub (hopefully temporarily), this week there are two opportunities to rectify this. Firstly, tomorrow night with the Pop-Up Night at the Barn and then on Sunday morning with the Annual Remembrance Service in the church where there will be refreshments and a chance to chat following the service.
In different ways each are going to be extremely enjoyable, so do try to attend both if you are around over the next couple of days. The Barn and The Church need our support right now!

“The annual Remembrance Service will take place in church this coming Sunday (12th November) at 10.50am, with the Act of Remembrance itself as close to 11am as we can manage – all are welcome, as ever. There will be a display in church featuring material connected with Norman Goss who gave his life in the Second World War, so do have a look at this. Carolyn Goss has kindly put this together to help us reflect on the real people behind our Remembrance observance each year. Do stay for refreshments after the service.

Advanced Notice of Road Sweeping Friday 1st December

Attendees were able to enjoy a display celebrating two unexpectedly connected cars, as part of the ‘Family Ties’ lawn, celebrating the diversity of car designers and developers for a range of marques, bringing over 20 cars together including Skoda, Lamborghini and Jaguar vehicles in the mix.

The much-loved Autojumble and Trader Village returned to Hangar 113, giving attendees the opportunity to pick up some memorabilia and browse the range of products on offer, while Tamiya also provided much excitement under-cover with a mini course in-situ for their range of remote-controlled cars.

East West Rail
The first phase of repairs to The Park Road are well underway and as previously reported the road will be closed to through traffic, but access for locals will be maintained throughout.
Phase One:
Monday 16th October to 10th November 2023 from the cross-roads with Mill Road to the turn-off for Godington.
Phase two:

As previously reported Bicester Motion plan to hold an Open Weekend  where everyone will have the opportunity to visit the site of the old quarry, which they plan to develop into a Wilderness park. This was originally scheduled for September but has been delayed. You will be informed at the earliest opportunity.

The Retrospective Planning Application (23/01085/F) applied for by Bicester Motion, has been referred to the  Cherwell Planning Committee but the date has not yet been announced.

Halloween Trail Saturday 28th October

Stratton Audley Local History Society
Next Friday, 3rd November there is to be an interesting talk being organised by the local history society on:

THE INDIAN ARMY DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR WITH AN OXFORD AND BUCKS LIGHT INFANTRY PERSPECTIVE

The presentation will take place in the Church on Friday 3rd November, at 7.30pm.
The talk will be given by Stephen Barker, Heritage Advisor to the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Cost £5 per person.
Churchyard Clearance of Debris
Your help is required to move some debris in the churchyard on Friday 3rd November. Please come along at 10am if you can spare an hour.
Then on Saturday 4th November 2023  at 10.30 hrs. a JCB hopper courtesy of Simon Goss will arrive and we will need to be ready to load the debris onto to it, for him to transport to the bonfire further over in the field. UnIt should take no more than 3 /4 journeys and then the job will be done without the use of wheelbarrows!

“Thank you to everyone who has supported the Barn pop up nights, they’ve been a great success, bringing everyone together whilst we are without our much loved pub! it has been lovely to see so many familiar and new faces to the barn from the village, we hope you are all enjoying them as much as we are!

A Statement from the barn…..
With our Christmas shop now open and as we head full on into this fabulous but crazy festive season, it feels like the right time to let you know that 2024 will see our Cafè close and the barn take a new direction. 
The last few years have been challenging for both large business and small and there has been no let up! We’ve worked hard to adapt to the twists and turns the world has thrown at us, and absorb some of the losses this created, now coupled with a recent health scare, it is time for us to pause and consider the future shape of the business. 
The shop & Café will close in their current form, until further notice on 22nd December 2023; rest assured, whatever we do, Christmas will always remain the heart of the barn and will be back for sure in 2024! 
In the meantime, please support us & our amazing team, pop in for coffee, enjoy a delicious cake or 2, take a lunch and browse our shop, let’s make this a season to remember!!

January Scramble – local residents discount available once again

Fixmystreet
I am frequently contacted about potholes and other local issues such as flytipping, abandoned cars, debris on roads and temporary signages being put up on waste land and whilst I can pass these on to my contacts, the very best way to report anything that concerns the county council is via their Fixmystreet portal. They tell me that it is checked daily and matters are put straight into the system for investigation.

Lost Silver Bracelet

Lost a Silver Bracelet?
A few weeks ago Millie Rawicz who lives in the Bicester Road near the entrance to the village, found a silver bracelet in the road outside her house. Despite asking around no one has come forward to claim it and she is concerned as it is a particularly nice piece of jewellery.

East West Rail
EWR will be carrying out reparation works to The Park road that runs from the A4421, passed Stratton Park and onto Godington and Poundon. The work will included repairs to the road surface, restoration of the verges to pre-works condition and replacement of safety signage, some of which has been damaged or disappeared. You should have received a leaflet through the door about it but it will be in two phases which will run concurrently. The road will be closed to through traffic but access for locals will be maintained throughout.

Phase One:

Trees in the Village
Following enquiries received from local residents about the lime trees in Cherry Street, we have been advised by Highways that a thorough survey of the trees in the village is to be carried out and as a result some works including pruning of the lime trees will be undertaken in the near future.

” Firstly, thanks to all those who supported the Cream Teas in church last Sunday. An amazing £500 was raised and has been sent on to the two tree appeals that we were raising money for – the Great Green Wall and the Atlantic Rainforest Appeal. Thank you for your generosity!

An Urgent Special Appeal 
Wulu is an area in South Sudan which is currently experiencing great hardship.  Stratton Audley Church and the wider Shelswell Benefice regularly try to help the local school there. Bishop Zechariah of the Wulu Diocese visited us last year and we have kept in regular contact with him.  He has recently sent us a message explaining that there is currently a big food shortage in Wulu. Bishop Zechariah and his family, and lots of people in his Diocese, do not have enough to eat (unless they have relatives who work in the Government or lots of cows).  Last year’s harvest was destroyed by flooding.  There is food in the market but the prices are very high.  There is no food provided by the UN Food Programme as their input was discontinued with the advent of the war in Ukraine. 
The church would like to try and help so will be asking for donations at services over the next couple of Sundays so that we can send these on (in addition to what we would normally send to the school). Your donations will be specifically for Bishop Zechariah to buy food for his family and others who are struggling in the Diocese. If you would like to send a contribution by bank transfer then please send it to the benefice bank account as below:

Coffee Morning Moves to the Church
The following is from Maggie Woodward:
“Because of the closure of the pub, the coffee morning which has been held every Wednesday will move to the Church as of next week. The sessions in August will be on 16th, 23rd and 30th then in September will change to every Tuesday because Little Lambs will be starting their new term on Wednesday 6th September. So the first coffee morning in September will be on 5th September and then every Tuesday thereafter at 11 a.m. till about 12 noon. The price will be £3 for cups of tea, coffee and biscuits. All are very welcome, pop in and meet the neighbours, have a friendly chat and make new friends.
Please take a minute or two to browse the bookshelves situated near the Church kitchen area. The books are there to borrow – there is an honesty box on the windowsill for any donations which would be very much appreciated”.

Fresh Fish every Thursday – Still Parking outside the pub!
Despite the pub closing,Jack from Grimsby continues to come to the village on Thursday’s between 6.15-7pm and parks his van outside the Red Lion. He has a wide selection of fresh fish and shellfish. You can just turn up or place orders in advance by text and his mobile number is 07535 935119.

Vegan Festival
The feed-back to the brief questionnaire regarding the recently held Vegan Festival at Bicester Heritage, elicited responses from some 37 households. This represents just over 20% of households in the village (circa 170). 16 were against, 12 were supportive and 9 were in the middle.
There were mixed views, but almost complete unanimity that BH must not be granted open-ended ability to run as many events as it wishes. Accordingly the Parish Council will be seeking to encourage Bicester Heritage to reconsider their application with regard to this matter before it goes to the planning committee.
The results have been collated into one document with complete anonymity for everyone and will be sent to the planning officer at CDC and Bicester Heritage so that they can assess for themselves the strength of feeling.

Fish & Chips Van in the village on Saturdays
For those new in the community, a Howe’s Fish and Chip van comes to the village every Saturday lunchtime from 1.30pm to 2pm. You will hear a bell (like a school bell) and his first stop is in Cherry Street. He then drives along Cavendish Place and stops again at the junction with Mill Road.

Scramblers X Coffee & Chrome Collective Assembly
Tickets to a special Scramblers event are on sale now, the Scramblers X Coffee & Chrome Collective Assembly!
In partnership with Bicester Heritage insurance partner Footman James, the Scramblers X Coffee & Chrome Collective Assembly will take place on the evening of Wednesday 16 August.

There’s no theme, it’s just a chance for you to spend an evening at Bicester Heritage and meet the Footman James team.
Under 15s attend Scramblers Assemblies for free and Young Driver will have its brilliant little Firefly electric cars for youngsters to try their hand at, so treat the kids.

Planning Applications

The planning application 23/01368/F for the Traveller Site located off the A4421 is currently under consideration by CDC planning officers.

The Retrospective Planning Application (23/01085/F) applied for by Bicester Motion, has been referred to the  Cherwell Planning Committee but the date has not yet been announced.

With regard to the Padbury Brook Solar Application (reference: 22/03873/F), again there is no further news.

As previously reported Bicester Motion plan to hold an Open Weekend in September where everyone will have the opportunity to visit the site of the old quarry, which  they plan to develop into a Wilderness park.

Peacock Relocated! The lovely Peacock who has been seen proudly parading around the village by numerous people over the last few weeks is thought to be a male, perhaps in search of a  partner. The advice given was not to feed him and as a result he would naturally fly back to where he came from.
However it did not work, but happily he has now been caught and taken to a Peacock friendly farm.
Churchyard Tidy-Up this Saturday
Your help to tidy-up the churchyard would once again be most appreciated. It is this Saturday 29th July 2023 from 09.30 to 12.30 hrs.
If you have never volunteered before just turn up and you will receive a very warm welcome. Bring your own tools if you can – strimmers , shears, secateurs, chain-saws, rakes, forks.The Church

Come along to our village church for a treat on Sunday 6th August (3-5pm). Enjoy scrumptious cream teas and cakes while finding out more about two special projects. All donations for teas will go towards the Woodland Trust’s ‘Atlantic Rainforest Restoration Appeal’ and Tree Aid’s ‘Great Green Wall Appeal’. We will also be looking at how we can help to provide more tree-cover locally. Do invite friends and family to join you in supporting this lovely summer event.

News of the Red Lion.  Probate on John’s Estate has finally been granted.  I am now in conversation with the brewery with regard to the handover and will let you all know in due course when that will be.  Soon, I hope.  I have no idea what plans they have when I do hand over – my rep has gone on holiday and there’s no-one for me to talk to at the Brewery.  Sorry to be so vague.  I might ask the ever patient John Honsinger to send out a special one-off email (pretty please, John!) when my last night can be announced.   

In the meantime, the opening hours are the same, and huge thanks to Tony Jones who has been absolutely amazing.

Coronation Street Party

What a wonderful weekend, and what a great day was held on Sunday 7th when we closed off Church Street and enjoyed a right royal knees up, with families and their friends celebrating in style. I won’t go on too long but we were blessed with the weather, cloudy to start and then full sunshine later on.
For those that were there (thought to number some 200 with some comings and goings), you know how good the day was, but for those who could not attend due to illness or other commitments, please see and share in the photos and one brief video via the following links

The Hog Roast provided by Fergie was one of the best and larger than we had expected, so he managed to serve up 160 baps. The 50 veggie burgers were also given a green tick by a number of people. Thanks to those who volunteered to cook the burgers and of course to Fergie, the man to go to for your next hog roast.

Thanks also to all the helpers who turned up first thing in the morning and made the task of getting everything ready so easy and enjoyable. Incidentally some of you may have seen bikers going through whilst we were assembling things and I have a received a written apology for a biker group in Bicester for any nuisance caused and for not bothering to take the diversion route!

Angie’s Coronation Cake was an incredibly light sponge on the inside with delicious icing and a detailed King Charles work of art on top. Thank you also to Mrs Gosling who paid for the ingredients.

Perhaps the stars of the day were the children who paraded up and down as Kings & Queens, made their bows and curtsies and later joined in the dancing. Well done Maggie for thinking of it and Sophie who executed it. In the background Sophie organised children’s activities in the annexe to the pub which was much appreciated by families with small children.

King Charles commemorative coins were given out to all children under 15 who were present and these were a gift organised by the Parish Council. If your child did not get one please let me or Anthony know ( flack.wine_train@btinternet.com ). Equally for those of you who weren’t present and would like a coin for your child, please get in touch as we will order a few more.

As usual Mike Gore’s band of merry men were a great hit, this time attending as the Monarchs and with guest singers Simeon Goss and Marcelle Walker, they set the place alight.

Finally there were the teas and numerous cakes that were provided by Maggie and other ladies in the village, all beautifully laid out in the road outside the church. This was followed by a brief Coronation Service in the church which was well attended.

Thanks again to all the helpers who cleared up. During the afternoon many people came up to me and said how much they appreciate events of this type and committed to be part of them in the future. It is heartening for those who have organised activities in the village over the years, to know that there are many more ready to step in and keep the spirit of community alive through social gatherings

For the record the whole event cost the Parish Council the following:

Road closure  Nil ( normally £90) waived by CDC and paid for by Central Government;
Hog Roast, burgers, band, equipment hire, commemorative coins, prizes and various other small misc items £1200. We also obtained a grant from Government of £400 (thank you Kathryn Walker) so our net expenditure when it appears in the accounts will show a cost of circa £800.

Coronation Street Party, Sunday 7th May

Stratton Audley ‘Picnic-in-the Street’ Party – Sunday 7th May

The Parish Council is working closely with the Red Lion, Maggie, Sophie and others and is delighted to report that everything is coming together to make the street party on Sunday the 7th May a celebration to remember.

A number of people have already volunteered to help on the day but more are welcome on the morning. We will be setting up from 9am outside the Red Lion, collecting and putting up the marquee, tables, chairs and bunting. So if you want to help and have not already done so, please do get in-touch.

The Hog Roast is free for all to share and a vegetarian burger alternative will also be available on a separate barbecue. Everyone is encouraged to bring whatever food and drink just like you would to a picnic. The pub will be open for drinks including offering pitchers of Pimms for just £13, down from the usual £17.00!

As with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year, if  you want to bring your own gazebo chairs and tables there will be room for you to set up in the street. Decorating your table and dressing-up yourself is to be encouraged.

A big shout-out for all the children in the community to dress up as Kings & Queen’s and enter the pageant parade where there will be prizes!

Sophie Nelson is organising some great children’s activities in the function room of the Red Lion form 12.30 onwards.

Angie Miles has very generously  baked a Coronation cake fit for a king and this will be available for all to share after the first live music session.

There will be piped music from the start and joining the Monarchs live band for a couple of songs during the afternoon will be a guest appearance from Simeon Goss!

Teas and cake organised by Maggie Woodward will be on offer at the church for those wishing to take it easier later in the day, all made by your neighbours.

And to end the day there will be a short celebratory Coronation service with some popular hymns for all to sing.
